TESTS
This histopathology department is a tertiary referral centre for Oncopathology and Immunofluorescence microscopy.
Facilities available in the department are as follows:
1) HISTOPATHOLOGY- Routine Biopsies & Surgical Pathology Specimens
2) INTRAOPERATIVE FROZEN SECTIONS/ STEROTACTIC BRAIN BIOPSIES
3) CYTOLOGY
1. Fine Needle Aspiration cytology- The procedure for superficial lesions in performed in the histopathology department 2. Gynaecological cytology (PAP Smears) 3. Fluid cytology: Cytocentrifuged deposits of fluids are evaluated.
4) IMMUNOHISTOCHEMISTRY- 54 tumour markers are available in the department. These markers are done on routine formalin fixed tissues in paraffin blocks. These markers help in the diagnosis, classification and prognostication of various tumours.
 5) IMMUNOFLUORESCENCE MICROSCOPY- For evaluation of kidney and skin biopsies.

Important Instructions
1. Fresh Biopsy to be collected in Michel’s Transport Medium provided by the Histopathology dept at the Ruby hall clinic.
2. If there is a time lag between collection and delivery to the histopathology lab, kindly preserve sample at 2-8 deg C in the refrigerator. 3. Formalin- Fixed tissue is unsuitable for all tests listed above except Nos 13 (Thioflavin T) and no. 14 (Fluorescent AFB). These tests are done on Paraffin blocks of formalin fixed tissues.
6) CYTOGENETICS
Recently a cytogenetics division has been initiated. FLUORESCENT IN SITU HYBRIDISATION (FISH) technique is now well established. Tests available as of now are: 1. Her2/ neu: This is done on paraffin blocks of breast cancer tissue.
2. BCR-ABL: Test is done on fresh blood sample (heparinised/ EDTA) of patients with Chronic Myeloid Leukaemia (CML). The translocation of Chromosome 9 and 22, ie Philadelphia Chromosome can now be detected by FISH.
FUTURE PLANS
The department has plans to establish the first ELECTRON MICROSCOPE in a corporate hospital in PUNE
